My First Real Pets!

I've never owned a pet in my life. My mother was very much anti-pet (because she hates shedding, cleaning up after animal poos, etc.). So basically I have no idea what to do with animals in general.

But Hero Material loves animals (he grew up with many different pets), so he decided that we should have pets.

Drum roll please…!

We bought two hamsters.

With their cage and everything, we spent about $50 at the pet store near our apartment. Although Hero Material's first choice was a dog, we couldn't due to our lease.

So meet Shiro and Kuro:

Shiro

Kuro

Shiro is the white hamster. She's very camera-shy, so I apologize for the picture quality. She's also very feisty, and she tried her best to run away when Hero Material took her out of the cage. Also she's the athletic one of the two. She spent about half an hour or so running in the wheel. I think she wants to try out for London Olympics.

Kuro is not as shy, but quite lazy. She likes to fling the dry herb and leaves we put in the cage (the pet store recommended it as it deodorizes the cage), but she doesn't like to do anything on the wheel, except possibly peeing. She's been eating some carrot bits in the cage.

I'm not getting any work done because I can't stop looking at them. I think they're still getting used to their new environment, and they're rather shy, but I think I'm in love.

BTW — do you have (or have you ever had) hamsters? If so, got any advice for me? :)

How adorable! We always had hamsters growing up – a lot less work than the dogs were LOL.

They’re fun to watch – so enjoy! They are nocturnal, so be prepared to hear that wheel going at all hours of the night!

My only advice is to double check you got two girls. We thought we got two girls the first time we had hamsters and we ended up with 9 babies a few months later!

Cute cute cute! We’ve never had hamsters, so I don’t have any advice for you. But we keep talking about getting them. I don’t know what stops us — maybe it’s the fact we already have two dogs.

I wish you luck with Shiro and Kuro. I’ll bet they’ll give you lots of enjoyment.

Have hamsters. Had, like, 27 at one point, and that’s when I took most of them back to the pet store, saying, “Help!”

White and Black, huh? :) Cute names!

Right now, I only have one hamster, Roadster, and can’t get another one because she’s a bit of a meany. I hate to leave her alone, but she tore another hamster up pretty bad, and had to have them in separate cages.

Oh, btw, female hamsters will, at point, not get along with another female hamster. They’re very solitary creatures, and I’d recommend you get them a ball for them, Nadia. A wheel might not be enough, and besides, it’s fun to see them roll in a ball across a room. And it’ll be easier for them since JP doesn’t exactly have carpeted floors. And I don’t consider tatami to be carpets. :)

DD — I’m pretty sure they’re girls. I checked Kuro at least. Hero Material played with Shiro, and I think he checked. The pet store workers said they were girls. They were kept in the same cage in the store also, and I don’t think they would’ve done that if it was a M/F pairing. But I’ll check again later.

    Lynn & Rob — Thanks!

I think you should buy two. Because you never know, and I think it’s good for them to have a friend in my unscientific opinion.

Shiro, for example, is very feisty but nervous. She likes to run away and jump off my hands, etc. (Scary when that happens because I don’t want her to get injured…!) Kuro is much more calm, although fairly feisty. I think Shiro is just more high-strung as well.

BTW — Shiro & Kuro were in the same cage at the pet store, so I don’t think Shiro’s personality is due to her sharing her cage with Kuro.

The pet store didn’t have a ball, so :( We ordered, so we’ll see how long it takes to get it.

BTW – What have you done to Roadster? LOL.

Oh – the ball is really fun! Mine always loved to roll around the house in that thing – it’s fun to watch.

    How are they doing today?
