I don’t think I’ve ever used them in my writing, but I like them anyway.
In no particular order:
- vermicular
- forlorn
- mansuetude
- indurate
- trichotillomania
- impuissant
- subreption
- attitudinize
- semelparous
- deglutition
- hibernaculum
- dégringolade
- apodictic

The only one I’ve used is “forlorn.”
by Alice Audrey July 24th, 2008 at 2:57 pmHmm, just wait while I get my dictionary.
by Shelley Munro July 24th, 2008 at 5:06 pmAlice — I’ve used forlorn & vermicular (but later had to get rid of them).
Shelley — I tried to use the following line in my story once: You trichotillomania-inducing SOB! Everyone vetoed that line. LOL.
by Nadia Lee July 24th, 2008 at 5:17 pmAre these in English? *looks a dictionary* I don’t see how I can fit “mansuetude” a dialogue between my hero and heroine. Hehehe! Happy TT!
by Tempest Knight July 24th, 2008 at 9:13 pmGreat list, Good scrabble words lol Happy T13!
by Adelle Laudan July 24th, 2008 at 9:38 pmQuick! Someone get me a dictionary! I’ve never used any og those either.
by Jennifer Shirk July 24th, 2008 at 9:50 pmI kind of like attitudinize. I am going to try and work that one into a conversation.
by pjazzypar July 24th, 2008 at 10:16 pmWow. I agree. I need a dictionary…
by Mel (silentdreamer) July 24th, 2008 at 10:16 pmGreat list! I think the only one I’ve ever used is forlorn.
by Stephanie July 24th, 2008 at 10:33 pmOh my… Here I thought I was pretty well read and I don’t know some of these! :P
by Terra July 24th, 2008 at 10:33 pmI– um, I don’t recognize any of those words..okay, forlorn. I recognize that one…and maybe a root or two in the others. LOL. Great list. I have some research to do. My favorite word is Nincompoop. Followed by Ninny. Think Hayley Mills saying, Don’t be such a Ninny!
by Bethanne July 24th, 2008 at 11:35 pmI love these!!!! I realized I was using tough words when my editor asked me what “lachrymose” meant. I love to find and use words like that.
by Jennifer McKenzie July 24th, 2008 at 11:46 pmBut they get edited out every time. I hear you.
Happy T13! I love your list today very cool and very interesting. I don’t know any of those words but I’m going to find out about them. Hope to see you at my 11th edition about Catherine Anderson at Talk About My Favorite Authors blog.
by Phoebe Jordan July 25th, 2008 at 12:10 amOoh…great words. I recognize a few of those. *grin*

by Elaine July 25th, 2008 at 5:03 amYes, ladies! They’re real words.
Tempest — Oh…I’d love to be able to use manseutude somewhere, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to.
Adelle — thanks! Happy T13 to you too!
Pjazzypar — attitudinize is a great word, isn’t it? LOL
Stephanie — I sometimes say forlorn, and BF said I was like the only one he knew who used that word regularly. LOL.
Terra — I don’t think it’s the reading. I learned these words by subscribing to M&W’s Word of the Day mailing list.
Bethanne — Ninny LOL.
Jennifer — she didn’t know?! She kinda could’ve looked it up or something. I’m a bit surprised that she didn’t. And I hear ya on the cool words getting edited out.
Phoebe — I’ll definitely stop by!
Chelle — Three’s always great.
Paige — thanks!
Happy TT, everyone!
